"The loveliest rediscovery of the vintage-comic-strip renaissance is [Walt and Skeezix]." ―The Washington Post

The Gasoline Alley gang enters a new decade with this volume Skeezix moves from childhood to early adolescence and the high spirits of the 1920s give way to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Walt and Phyllis Wallet travel to England, an extended tour that echoes the real-life journey taken by the cartoonist Frank King and his family in the late 1920s. While his parents are away, Skeezix tries to solve the mystery of an arsonist. Now entering his teens, he comes to the fore of the strip as an adventurous boy surrounded by a gang of like-minded pals, and Gasoline Alley becomes an influential pillar of teenage culture, soon to be widely imitated in Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland films as well as in Archie comics.
Designed and edited by Chris Ware (Building Stories), this sixth volume of Walt and Skeezix is a celebration of and an homage to American middle-class life in the early twentieth century. An introductory essay from the comics historian Jeet Heer (In Love with Art Francoise Mouly's Adventures in Comics with Art Spiegelman), historical appendixes from the Chicago cultural historian Tim Samuelson, and tons of extras make this book a dream come true for Gasoline Alley fans.

A new volume of Walt & Skeezix is finally out. (no idea when we will see the next one).

As noted by another reviewer, Skeezix is now older (about 11) and so more a character in his own right in the strip. We get a lot of stuff with him collecting postage cancellations from around the country and the world, in competition with a club of other boys: the Alley Rangers. He even has a sort-of girl friend named Sally (no. they won't get married).

The Wallet family grows with a new guard dog added in, after they family deals with a breakin while they are sleeping.

There are actually several long trips by the family. In addition to the 2 mentioned in another review. Walt considers buying a cabin by a lake for Blossom, but is convinced to take a cruise to Europe. His boss allows this, as he'll do some business in England.

Overall, a good collection. I look forward to the next one.

I am very much looking to the next book coming out !!!
With the number of times Book Six’s release date was pushed back I began to fear it may never be published but it’s finally here. It’s a new decade and a new look for Walt and Skeezix with Drawn And Quarterly changing to a blue cover. Luckily the book dimensions remain the same so they all fit together nicely on a bookshelf. There has been a shift in the story most notably due to Skeezix now reaching the age of 10. He’s more of a costar with Walt rather than merely a child that Walt is looking after. Skeezix is able to have adventures entirely separated from Walt.

It’s fascinating to see how it is growing up a boy in 1931. No internet, no smart phones, no computers although I was quite surprised when mention was made of television. Although the Wallet’s did not own one, Walt was aware that they were on the horizon. This is also the period when the country was in the throes of the Depression. Although it has little financial effect on Walt there are subtle hints sprinkled around. As the book’s introduction mentions, people in the U.S., in 1931, had no idea the Depression was going to last so long so there wasn’t an obsession with it. We even get some very rare political interjections into the comics as Walt and Blossom argue whether Hoover and the Republican's are to blame for the Depression and whether or not Roosevelt and the Democrats should get a chance to take the reigns. Walt takes the side of Hoover and Blossom argues for Roosevelt. To his credit Frank King never seems to show favoritism to either side despite being a Conservative himself.

Apparently Walt gives the impression of being burned out because his boss, Mr. Wicker, insists he take a months long paid vacation to rejuvenate. This seems like a really weird thing for a manager to do in the height of the Depression, particularly since there seems to be no real reason why Walt would be frazzled. It's a silly set up but a very cool four months as Walt, Blossom and Skeezix drive around a significant portion of the U.S. including several dips down into Mexico. From an historical standpoint this is a fascinating tour of the U.S. circa 1931. If you can get past the fact that Walt and Blossom leave their near infant son Corky back home for four months it's a pretty cool choice by Frank King who clearly made this tour himself for research. The Wallet's are barely back home when Mr. Wicker once again sends Walt on a trip. This time to research the life of George Washington and so King begins a months long history of our first president. It is easily the dullest Gasoline story line I can recall and I was glad when it was over. When Walt returns, Wicker seems not to care the least about his research which seems to indicate that Walt serves little to no purpose in his management position. I don't think this was intentional on Frank King's part. It's also interesting how rarely Blossom appears on the trip despite being along for the ride. She just disappears to make room for Walt and Skeezix.

I absolutely love Gasoline Alley and consider Frank King to be one of the all-time great comic storytellers. Having the series move in real time lends a tremendous amount of authenticity allowing the characters to feel real. It’s hard not to feel invested in the characters. With Book Six, Frank King has really toned down the extended storylines particularly ones involving Mdm. Octave. I really didn’t like the political intrigue of the Octave storylines so this book is a breath of fresh air. As much as I’ve loved all the Gasoline Alley books this one is probably my favorite because it simply focuses on the simple life of the Wallets rather than the endless storyline of Skeezix possibly being kidnapped or taken by the courts.
